CHAPTER THIRTEEN

I hurried towards my adoptive parents’ home, hoping to make it there in time for dinner. Let’s see if they would like to go out to eat. They don’t do that very often, but I’d like to celebrate making a massive amount of money, I thought, getting stuck daydreaming about what I could do with the money. I was so lost in my thoughts, I missed the return of the “being watched” feeling. I ducked through an alley to avoid a large crowd, and the feeling spiked enough that I stopped moving.

I started to look around when a bag was dropped over my head. “Hurry and grab him! He is at Smoke, so use your whole strength!” I heard a hard whisper from behind me. I could sense three people, now that I was paying attention. The one directly behind me was at Smoke Gathering level, while the two who grabbed my arms were only at the Fog Gathering level. What is going on? I thought, about to reflexively break their grip. I stopped myself before I did, though, as I processed what they said. The Smoke gatherer pulled my trisula out of my belt, and then took the pouch holding my money as well.

Only at Smoke? My hiding my aura must have confused them. I wonder where they are taking me. Is this robbery or more sinister? I thought for a second, then dove into my center to the rune placed when I Bonded Sia. I focused on the rune and tried to project my thoughts. Sia, can you hear me?

A couple seconds passed, with the men frog-marching me down the alley, before I mentally heard, “Aiden? Yes, I heard you. Where are you?”

Sia, can you tell the Headmaster and Librarian Narwan that I’m currently being kidnapped? I might need help to get out, though right now I could easily escape. I’m wondering if they’ve grabbed other people, so I’m letting them take me.

“I will tell them,” Sia told me. I could feel exasperation in the thoughts he projected at me. “Keep in contact with me. If I cannot feel you, I will come and burn down everything near where you were. Stay safe over all, okay?”

Will do, Sia, I thought back to him. I kept a low level of Aether running through my senses meridian, which seemed to enhance not only my normal senses, but also the extra sense I received at Mist of the Aether around me and in people weaker than me. I was suddenly lifted up, and I felt a rug wrap around me. Well, I guess that’s one way to sneak me through the city. Too bad for them I’ll be able to sense everything about where we’re going.

They carried me towards the docks, finally entering a building only a few blocks away from the river. I was narrating every turn to Sia, who assured me he was relating them to Mentor Jameson. Mentor Jameson was leading a team of third and fourth-tiers just in case I got in over my head.
